boho feature wall: step by step tutorial
The backstory:
It’s no secret that Mila is a busy body and entering toddlerhood has only amplified her drive to learn and explore! This has been so amazing to see but our girl seriously needed a play space upgrade. Her previous plays space consisted of the only open corner on our main floor between our kitchen and living room. This was clearly not enough space - so Andre and I took to clearing out our bonus room and decided to make her own room!
If you’re new here you may not know that my educational background is in the Early Years (ages 0-5). As you can imagine, creating an indoor space where Mila’s development can flourish with play space and experiences is an absolutely heavenly job for me! Another post will follow with a full playroom reveal! 🤍
The Process:
The first task up for completion in Miss Mila’s new space was painting! I wanted her room to look inviting and fun without too much ‘colour noise’. We nailed down an abstract rainbow design that seemed easy enough to accomplish for amateur painters like ourselves and hoped over to our local Benjamin Moore - Beacon Heights to check out some colour swatches!
For my local YYC folks, the team at Beacon Heights Benjamin Moore was incredibly helpful and efficient in helping us choose colours, they even have a drive through - perfect contactless option!
We chose to go with 5 colours for the rainbow pattern in sample size cans - which was more than enough to complete the wall, including double/triple coats.
We chose a mix of terracotta, burnt orange, pinkie, cream, and beige. Here are the exact colour names:
CSP-1120 - Canyon Rock (deep orange red - 1st colour from ground up)
CSP-1135 - Coral Bells (organie - 2nd colour from ground up + top)
CSP-1115 - Tropical Fruit (pink tone)
AF-190 - Boudoir (beige)
AF-255 - Fondant (white)
The Painting
Alright, into the meat and potatoes - here is the step by step for how we achieved this feature wall!
Drawing + planning wall to scale
Plan it out:
There’s nothing worse than misjudging your creation and being left with an awkwardly painted space! Soooo draw.it.out! Grab a piece of paper and draw your wall to scale. Trace your chosen design and label each section with the corresponding colour.
Prep your space
To prep our space for painting we lined our carpet with newspaper and covered baseboards, ceiling, and wall edges with painters tape (we snagged ours at Home Depot). Next we prepped our painting trays and rollers with each of the 5 colours - ours were from Benjamin Moore.
The final and most important step in the prep was drawing lines lightly on the wall. This was important to make sure we liked the final shape and flow of colours!
Get Painting
on your marks, get set, PAINT, and paint some more 😅.
Start from the bottom up for this design! Paint in your first pencil section using a roller for as much as you can to save time. Move to a smaller (thinner) brush as you get closer to the end of the pencil line!
TIP: to prevent the paint from smudging upwards into the other colours - hold the brush close to the end - squeezing the bristles together!
Begin the next colour before going back to the first colour and applying a second coat if needed!
*none of our layers needed a second coat except for the white (lightest) colour in Fondant!Continue until you have painted in all pencilled sections of the feature wall. Once completed go in an complete touch ups as needed.
Voila!!!
The feature wall is complete!
