3 Tips For Working Out With A Newborn

These tips are for all the mamas in the early days when their little ones do not yet sleep through the night and are not on a consistent nap schedule.

Your babe is a few months old and your doctor has cleared you to resume all regular activities and exercise, sound familiar?

If you’re anything like me, this news was both exciting and daunting to hear. On one hand, I was excited to begin working out again. On the other, I was so unsure of how any kind of workout could be successful with a fussy/collicy newborn. 


After much trial and a lot of error I wanted to share the most effective strategies for Mila and I with you. 


Top 3 Tips For Working Out With A Fussy Babe:


  1. Keep a baby swing close by

This has been the number one most effective thing for me. I will place Mila in her swing for as long as she will allow to get the larger chunk of my workout complete. I place her swing in direct eye sight of me so she knows I am close by. It is hilarious watching her stare at me, all of the movement seems to really fascinate her - for a short while anyways. 



2. Plan for your workout during the morning 


This one is key for me. I plan all my workouts first thing in the morning while Mila is so young and fussy. Right when Mila wakes up we will do our morning routine together and then I’ll head downstairs and begin my workout. As most know, collicy babes experience their peak or worst bout of fussiness in the late afternoon/evening. As you could imagine. It would truly be impossible for me to successfully complete any workout with a screaming baby - so I catch her when she’s happiest and most settled in the mornings.

3. Take them along with you 

When the swing no longer keeps her distracted and the fussiness starts up, I will take her out of her seat, plop her my hip and finish my workout with her - as long as it’s safe to do so of course. This is a fun and additional way to bond with your baby too! They will also get a workout in as they practice head strength with you. I know not all babies will be the same, but Mila loves moving around with me.
